Västsahariska mediaaktivister förföljda

Den marockanska regimens förtryck mot västsahariska aktivister är fortsatt hård. Equipo Mediatico är en grupp som försöker bryta mediablockaden kring ockupationen av Västsahara genom att rapportera från ockuperad mark. Under den senaste tiden har två av deras medlemmar gripits och misshandlats på grund av att de berättat vad de sett.

Nedan publicerar vi det uttalande som Emmaus Björkå har ställt sig bakom som är ett fördömande av den senaste tidens händelser. Vi stödjer Equipo Mediatico och andra grupper som kämpar för att bryta informationsblockaden.

STATEMENT OF SUPPORT TO ”EQUIPO MEDIATICO” AND DENOUNCEMENT OF THE PERSECUTION OF ITS MEMBERS IN TTOO

37 years have passed since the so-called ”Green March”, organized by Morocco with the support of other international powers, which was the military occupation of a Spanish colonial territory that had been internationally recognized as pending decolonization by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Almost four decades later, the international community continues to turn a deaf ear to the unanimous cry of a people that have made it clear that they will never accept anything less than full recovery of the sovereignty over all the Saharawi territory, in compliance with the rights they have on the basis of international law.

Political repression, violation of human rights, including enforced disappearance, arbitrary detention, torture, rape, extrajudicial executions, excessive use of force have been the methods of action of the occupying Moroccan administration against the just demands of the Saharawi people.

It is now nearly 2 years after the events of Gdeim Izik, where the Saharawi people challenged the occupant bysetting up a protest camp on the outskirts of the occupied city of El Aaiún to claim the improvement of their living conditions and the call for a referendum on self-determination, and that was evicted to blood and fire by the Moroccan army, causing many casualties through death, dozens of injured and missing persons and detainees, which led to the unanimous condemnation by the international community.

Today the Saharawi people continue to suffer the repression by the Moroccan occupation, this time against ”Equipo Mediático” (Media Team), a group of young girls and boys of Western Sahara.
Their job is to record everything that is happening there, such as demonstrations, testimonies of victims, etc. In this way they try to break the information blockade to the territory by the occupation.

We are a group of young people committed to break the information blockade in the Territories Occupied by Morocco in Western Sahara, risking our lives every day so that the world may know the serious violation of human rights committed by the regime of Mohamed VI against the Saharawi civil population. Until the freedom of our land, WESTERN SAHARA!

EM is being persecuted, with arrests, torture, threats and coercion to cease to perform its work.
On June 11, after a peaceful demonstration organized by the coordination of Gdeim Izik, two boys were arrested:
Omar Karkoub aged 26 and Belgacem aged 15 were inside a car and a patrol of the Moroccan police arrested them, confiscated their camera and took them to the police station.

Omar Karkoub, after 6 hours of interrogation, was beaten with truncheons on the legs, shoulders, head and face by Moroccan agents. He also suffered insults and threats.

Interviewed by EM, Karkoub explained that the investigators focused their questions on the work of the communication team and that they mentioned the names of some of its militants.
The police threatened Karkoub with imprisonment if he continues with his information work which is meant to disseminate the atrocities against those that are subjected thereto and particularly the newsletters on the interventions of the military and security forces against the Sahrawi peaceful demonstrators.

Omar and Belgacem were released on June 12, after paying a fine of 1000 DH, which is about 90 Euros.

This is not the first time that the occupation authorities violate in a violent manner the freedom of expression and information of the communication team, with intimidation, torture and arbitrary detention of its members.

WE DENOUNCE
The persecution and repression that EM and all the Saharawi civil population are suffering at the hands of the Alawite dictatorial regime.

WE DEMAND
We demand the release of all political prisoners, 22 prisoners who are in Sale jail in Morocco, some of them being members of EM.

We demand that the government of Spain has an active attitude toward the Moroccan monarchy in the surveillance and enforcement of Human Rights, as well as a strong commitment to the self-determination of the Saharawi people, a duty it still holds for being de facto the administering Power.

We also demand the immediate opening of the Saharawi territories to human rights observers and the end of the occupation of Western Sahara.

SUPPORT
Faced with this situation we support the freedom of the Saharawi people, the right to self-determination, the right to express themselves freely and above all, our strong support to ”Equipo Mediático”.

With this statement we also want to make known to the Moroccan government, that we will not stop our struggle for freedom of Western Sahara and that they will not be able to hide the barbarity that they are committing against the Saharawi people.
